The Sanderson Museum on Creek Road on Chadds Ford is in need of some work, so the museum board held a fundraiser at Brandywine Prime Monday night. Several dozen people attended.
Chuck Ulmann, the curator at the Sanderson, said they need $25,000 to $26,000 to keep the house in good condition. Wood needs to be replaced and the exterior needs painting.
“We’ve got to keep the outside intact,” he said.
In addition, the money raised would be to digitize what’s in the collection and to preserve the artwork. Ulmann said they hope to start work in the spring.
The Sanderson Museum is maintained in honor of Christian Sanderson, a long-time iconic figure in Chadds Ford. He was a teacher, a fiddler and a collector of memorabilia.
He and his mother, Hanna, used to live in the Ring House, Gen. George Washington’s Headquarters prior to the Battle of the Brandywine in September 1777. In 1937 they moved to the little house on Creek Road. A few years after Sanderson died in 1966, a few friends — including Andrew Wyeth — were instrumental in turning the house into the museum that bears his name.
