It’s been a year and a month since the flooding from Hurricane Ida destroyed Hank’s Place, and it could be another year or maybe two before the iconic Chadds Ford eatery reopens on Creek Road.

Owners Anthony and Katie Young said they’re committed to rebuilding, but in the meantime, they’re opening another Hank’s, this time in Kennett Square. An official announcement was to have been made on Labor Day weekend, but that announcement was put on hold.

Kennett Square Mayor Matt Fetick said on Tuesday that the owner of Kennett Steak and Mushroom — on Birch Street at the intersection with S. Broad Street — had to temporarily transfer his restaurant’s liquor license before the location could be used for Hank’s Place.

As yet, there’s also no word on when Hank’s will open in Kennett, but the food truck that had been serving grab-and-go food in the parking lot since April is now gone. It was moved Saturday morning, Oct. 1, without any official advanced notice. A sign at the restaurant says simply to follow Hank’s to Kennett Square.

Katie Young previously said they would be entering a month-to-month lease to move into the former Kennett Steak and Mushroom Restaurant on Birch Street near the Creamery.

The Youngs had received zoning variances in August to rebuild on Creek Road with the new restaurant raised nine feet so it would be out of the flood plain. They had previously gotten approval for a demolition permit to raze the flooded-out structure, but they would still need conditional use approval from Chadds Ford supervisors to allow for an open-air deck.
