Former rep. heads ChesCo LP

Former state Rep. Dan Truitt is now the new chairman of the Chester County Libertarian Party. Truitt and the other new party officers were elected during the county affiliate's April 19 business meeting.

Truitt, who served three terms as a Republican state representative for the 156th Legislative District — which includes Birmingham Township —said he’s been libertarian for decades and thinks others share that position, even if they don’t acknowledge it.

Former state Rep. Dan Truitt is now the chairman of the Chester County Libertarian Party.

“I believe that there are a lot of other folks like me in Chester County who are Libertarians and just don't realize it because they haven't heard enough about how Libertarians are different from Republicans and Democrats,” Truitt said in a press release.

The  East Goshen Township resident added that he wants to continue growing the party within the county and “expand the perception of the Libertarian Party as a viable alternative to the duopoly and increase the number of registered Libertarians in Chester County.”

To do that, he said, he wants the county party to continue promoting volunteerism and personal rights. And he welcomes people from all political parties and those with no party affiliation to attend the ChesCo LP’s monthly meetings held on the third Tuesday of the month at Timothy’s restaurant in West Chester.

Truitt, an engineer by trade, served as a state representative from 2011 to 2016. He lost the 2016 election to Carolyn Comitta, who was the mayor of West Chester at the time. He changed his party affiliation after the 2016 election. Since the 2021 general election, Truitt has been the LPCC representative with the Chester County Board of Elections in its effort to improve the election process and integrity.

The other LPCC officers elected include Jason Crane as vice-chair, Margaret Schmitt as treasurer, and Jonathan Muir, who continues to serve as secretary. Crane was also elected to be a West Chester constable in the 2021 election.
