Budgets and bikes at U-CF

School board members in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District know what budget they’ll be voting on during the June 19 meeting. The nine members voted to move forward with the proposed final budget during the May 15 meeting.

The proposal calls for an estimated revenue of $100,522,120 and anticipated expenses of $100,902,107. Both figures represent increases of more than 5.7 percent.

Millage rates will also rise if the budget passes next month. The property tax rate for Chester County property owners will be 31.95 mils, and 16.72 mils for property owners in Chadds Ford Township. (A mil is a tax of $1 for every $1,000 of assessed property value.)

Mountain biking is coming to U-CF.

Also during the May 15 meeting, the board voted to approve the creation of a mountain bike team. This would be a club sport, as the crew team is. The effort was sparked by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Cycling League. PICL refers to itself as a youth development organization that uses mountain biking to inspire healthy lifestyles, build strong communities, and engage youth in trail stewardship.

There are already teams in Downingtown, Great Valley, and Owen J Roberts.

The team would be open to all students in grades six through 12 and is co-ed. Students are grouped by grade. The season is officially from July 1 and goes onto November, the U-CF group wouldn’t get started until the fall.

According to the school board’s documents, there is a team league registration fee of $100 and a $220 fee per rider. There are also registration fees per season and race entry fees, along with travel and equipment costs. Director Erin Talbert said after the meeting that funding still needs to be worked out and those matters would be discussed later.

Also to be determined late by the club are its board members — president, vice-president, and treasurer — a team director, head coach, and coaches.
