Stroud Water Research Center and several municipalities, including Birmingham Township, will celebrate World Water Day on March 22. Birmingham Township supervisors announced participation during the board’s March 6 meeting.
This is a free community event, held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. but people are asked to register so Stroud knows how many people to expect. People can register here. It’s an outdoor event to be held at Stroud Research Center, 970 Spencer Road in Avondale. It will be held rain or shine.
World Water Day is a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocates for sustainable management of freshwater resources. According to the CDC, World Water Day “highlights its importance, and raises awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water. Every year, since 1993, CDC and organizations around the globe dedicate the day to drawing attention to the global water crisis.”
No one from Stroud was available to talk on the record, but an advisory said the day is to “celebrate and learn about the world’s most precious natural resource — clean fresh water— and how to protect it.”
Activities include the discovery of live stream bugs, stream ecology videos, a bilingual (Spanish and English) reading of the Creek Critters children’s picture book, tours of the Stroud Center, and an electrofishing demonstration to learn how real scientists sample eels, trout, and other underwater neighbors in White Clay Creek, the advisory said. There will also be a food truck on site offering dinner options.
