BP screening and CPR in DelCo

Delaware County Health Department is offering free blood pressure screening and CPR training on Friday, Feb. 24.

The blood pressure screening is a partnered effort with Main Line Health in recognition of Black History Month and will be held at the Yeadon Wellness Center located at 125 Chester Avenue, Yeadon, PA 19050 from 10 a.m. to noon.

“High blood pressure is the leading cause of heart disease and stroke in the United States and very common in Delaware County” – said Delaware County Health Department Director Melissa Lyon in a press release. “The concerning fact about high blood pressure is that it usually comes with little or no symptoms. The only way for residents to know if they have high blood pressure is to get screened. “

High blood pressure affects almost half of the population in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control. It increases the risk of heart disease and stroke and is more common among blacks — 54 percent — than whites — 46 percent. Among other ethnic groups, roughly 39 percent of Asians are affected, as are 36 percent of Hispanics.

The CPR classes, done in partnership with Keystone First, Delaware Citizen Corp, and the health department will be held at the Keystone First Wellness and Opportunity Center located at1929 W. 9th Street Chester, Pennsylvania 19013 11a.m to noon, and from 2-3 p.m.. Spanish instructors will be on hand.

Registration for this training opportunity is required. Delaware County residents interested in attending these in-person classes can register at https://delcocovid.as.me/dchdcpr. Residents who need assistance registering can reach out to the Delaware County Wellness Line by phone at 484-276-2100 or email DelcoWellness@co.delaware.pa.us.

CPR —cardiopulmonary resuscitation — is an emergency procedure that can help save a person’s life if their breathing or heart stops. “It is crucial to get CPR training before it is too late. A matter of minutes could be the difference in saving a life,” Lyon said.
