Chadds Ford Township celebrates Earth Day with a planting event in and around the township playground.

Chadds Ford Township held its own Earth Day observance by planting shrubs and perennials in and around the township park and playground Friday. The township held a small dedication for the playground in November by planting daffodils, but Supervisors’ Chairman Samantha Reiner said the April 22 planting makes the site even better.

Chadds Ford Township Manager Maryann Furlong, left, along with Open Space Committee members Kathleen Goodier and Dave Poston, plants shrubs at the township playground.

“The grounds were finished, but there was no life, it was just mulch and grass,” she said. Reiner added that the beautification idea came from soon-to-be retiring township Manager Maryann Furlong.

It was an early event, beginning at 10 a.m., so there weren’t many volunteers, but there were enough to get the job done. Reiner and Furlong were joined by Open Space committee members Dave Poston and Kathleen Goodier, Fire Marshal Phil Wenrich, and other residents and non-residents alike.

Furlong said the Brandywine Conservancy was also donating plants for the project, but added that will have to wait until after the conservancy’s annual plant sale next month.
