Longwood Fire Chief A. J. McCarthy asks citizens in the Longwood service area to continue their financial support of the life-saving Longwood organization. Citing unanticipated changes and sacrifices because of the COVID19 pandemic, McCarthy said his fire company decided not to do its normal annual solicitation. Yet, Longwood Fire Co. still received some needed personal protective equipment, for which they are appreciative. The first Steamin’ Day of 2020 at the Marshall Steam Museum at Auburn Heights will be for members only from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 6. Activities will be curtailed to adhere to state and CDC guidelines. However, the event will include the debut of a newly renovated museum (with controlled entry and capacity), train and Mountain Wagon rides (socially distanced, of course), children’s activities, Lionel electric train display and more! The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is expanding financial assistance and offering a sibling discount for students attending their learning centers this fall. YGBW’s learning centers will provide academic support, physical fitness activities, and socialization opportunities for children in kindergarten through sixth-grade Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. with optional aftercare. YGBW learning centers will provide dedicated academic support to students to complete their schoolwork, as well as fitness and socialization opportunities. A YGBW staff member will supervise each group of 12 students, and a degreed teacher or educational specialist will be available for every two groups, ensuring a staff-to-student ratio of 1:8.
