Police Log June 19: Crashes, DUI, harassment

An unnamed motorist was charged with careless driving after running a vehicle off E. Street Road in East Marlborough Township on May 5. Police said the driver was trying to turn right onto Schoolhouse Road but hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. The vehicle, a General Motors Acadia, went into an open field. No injuries were reported.

Charles T. Cooper, 50, of Parkesburg, was cited after the Lexus LS 400 he was driving went off Locust Grove Road in Pocopson Township on June 12, police said. According to the report, Cooper failed to negotiate a left-hand curve. The car then hit a tree, rolled down a hill and into a fence. No injury was reported.

A 22-year-old motorcyclist was charged with careless driving after losing control of his Harley Davidson on Doe Run Road. Police said James T. Tinsman, of West Chester, failed to notice a car in front of him was slowing down. He swerved left to avoid contact, the report said, and crashed into the roadway and was thrown from the bike. Police said he was transported to Paoli Hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

A four-vehicle crash in Pennsbury Township at the railroad crossing on Route 1 on June 11 resulted in no reported injuries, but two drivers were cited. Police said two vehicles had already stopped in the left eastbound lane when two other vehicles came in from behind and, one after another, hit the vehicle in front. Police identified the cited drivers as Nicholas P. Dewey, 20, of Christiana, and Eric S. Eisel, 20, of Kennett Square. Both were charged with careless driving, police said.

Stephan G. Cassel, 71, of Coatesville, was cited after his vehicle ran off Doe Run Road in West Marlborough Township on June 10, a police report said. According to the report, Cassel was driving uphill, east on Doe Run, near Apple Grove Road when the 2012 Honda Odyssey he was driving left the roadway, hit a culvert and then a fence. Cassel was unhurt, police said.

Police said a Coatesville woman, Ashlee A. Johnson, 29, was slightly injured but not transported following a one-vehicle accident in West Marlborough Township on June 14. According to the report,  Johnson was driving on Ryan Road, a gravel roadway with dust in the air, when she lost traction and visibility. She applied the brakes while negotiating a curve, the report said, but couldn’t slow enough and lost control. The vehicle spun and hit an embankment. Police said there was an injury to her left arm, while two children passengers were unhurt.

Southern Chester County Regional Police

Rigoberto Gomez-Villegas, 39, of Coatesville, was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses, following a traffic stop for erratic driving. The incident occurred on May 12 at 2:40 a.m., at Newark Road and Main Street, in New Garden Township, police said. According to a report, police observed indicators suggesting intoxication and field sobriety tests showed impairment. A records check revealed that he was an unlicensed driver. A chemical test of his breath resulted in a blood alcohol content of 0.119 percent

Police said Brandon A. Mitchell, 24, of Newark was charged with DUI (Controlled Substances) and related traffic offenses, as well as with violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act, after lab results confirmed that he had been operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of marijuana. The case is pending a preliminary hearing.

Rigoberto Gomez-Hernandez, 51, of Avondale, was arrested and charged with simple assault and harassment, following an altercation during which he is accused of punching a female victim numerous times about the face and head. The incident occurred on May 7 in New Garden Township, a police report said. Police said they observed evidence of recent physical injury to the victim and took Gomez-Hernandez into custody. He was transported to Central Booking where he was processed and held for arraignment. He was initially committed to the Chester County Prison in lieu of $10,000. The case is pending court.
