Chesterbrook Academy Principal Erin Hayes gets her kids ready to take part in a “trike-a-thon” to benefit St. Jude’s Hospital for Children.

It wasn’t quite what Steppenwolf had in mind when that group sang “Born to be Wild,” but students at Chesterbrook Academy in Chadds Ford did get their motors running — sort of — when the school had a “trike-a-thon” at the school parking lot Friday morning.

The students, aged 2-5, rode tricycles, bicycles, scooters, cycles with no pedals and rode in trikes that were pushed like baby carriages. Others just walked. It was part of a celebration and done in support of St. Jude Hospital, said Principal Erin Hayes.

Hayes said the school holds benefits several times a year to help children’s causes. This time it was St. Jude's turn. The school raised $275 online and an additional $120 through donations, she said.

For the kids, though, it was just a chance to ride around the parking lot — which the school had closed off for the event.
