Ray Hendershot's "My World, Chapter 4" is now on exhibit at Barbara Moore Fine Art Gallery in the Chadds Ford Barn Shops.

At 87 years old, Ray Hendershot is not only still going strong, but he’s also continuing to evolve as an artist. His “My Word, Chapter 4” is now on exhibit at Barbara Moore Fine Art Gallery in Chadds Ford Township.

Hendershot’s art career began as a child. He doesn’t recall at exactly what age, but he said he’s been painting for at least 75 years. As a child, he lived in an apartment where there also lived a house painter who would bring home his leftover house paints and use it to make fine art.

“That really piqued my interest,” Hendershot said

He also recalls copying photos he saw in newspapers during WWII.

Over the years, he became known for his strong watercolors, but now he’s also mixing in acrylics with watercolor. He said that gives his work greater depth.

“I can’t wait to try new things,” he said. “I’m still enjoying this and want to do more.”

But there is also the old. In this case, the old is a return to the little gallery in the Barn Shops on Route 1 in Chadds Ford. Though the name of the gallery changed a few years ago, it’s still the same location where he has shown at least 10 other times, including the first three parts of “My World.”

And gallery owner Barbara Moore, who was also the director of the former Chadds Ford Gallery, is glad to have his work on display in her shop.

“Ray’s art is warm and inviting. It’s soft, but that just makes you want to look closer. It gives me a good feeling to have his artwork in here,” Moore said.

“My World, Chapter 4” remains on display through Oct. 24. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
