Concord rescinds policy; grants Wawa, Maris Grove requests

In a rare move, Concord Township Council rescinded in September a policy it approved in August. During that Aug. 7 meeting, Council voted to disallow political tables at township sponsored community events such as Community Day and Senior Day. At the time, Council member Joshua Twersky said the members who voted for the ban were “spitting on the Constitution.”

During the Sept. 4 meeting, Council President Dominic Pileggi said the township had received numerous calls and emails — all polite, he stressed — against the prohibition.

Council voted unanimously to repeal the change last night.

“What you could do before, you can do now,” Pileggi said after the vote.

Maris Grove, Wawa get approval

Also Tuesday night, Council gave official approval to requests made by Wawa and Maris Grove. Wawa went through a conditional use hearing last month in order to sell propane gas from a self-serve kiosk at its two locations in Concord and Maris Grove went through a hearing in July to get a zoning change for a 3.8-acre parcel it wants to buy.

The parcel of land Maris Grove wants is behind Buffalo Wild Wings on Route 1. It went through a zoning change hearing last month to have that parcel rezoned from Commercial to the CCRC overlay which allows for the retirement community.

Maris Grove wants to use the parcel as green space and for stormwater management. Leaving that acreage green offsets the retirement community’s need to increase parking elsewhere on its property.

Council also authorized a reverse subdivision to allow the new parcel to be incorporated into the rest of Maris Grove’s territory.

The other action allows for self-serve propane vending machines at Wawa’s store on Route 1 and the other on Route 202 at Naamans Creek Road. Wawa went through a conditional hearing for approval in late August. A story on that hearing can be found here.
