Anniversary ‘in deed’

When the Chadds Ford Historical Society holds its 50th anniversary party next week, attendees will get a chance to see a few things few people have seen before. Specifically, they’ll get a glimpse at the actual deed of the John Chads House.

They’ll also get a glimpse of an original Andy Wyeth painting that was used as the cover of the program for the 1968 fundraiser that led to the society buying the Chadds House.

There will also be two other items. One is a ledger, or Day Book, from the import/export business of William Seal and Christopher Marsh. The other item will not be revealed until the night of the anniversary party.

The deed for the house is dated Feb. 5, 1723. According to CFHS Board President Phyllis Recca, the deed was donated to the Historical Society several years ago by Suzanne Sbandi who found the deed in a box of old papers. It granted the house to John Chadds, from his mother Grace Stephenson Chadsey. It was the younger Chadds who changed the family name.

The party, “The Cannon Ball” will be at The Gables. From 7-11 p.m. on Aug. 24. It commemorates the founding of the society by Virginia "Pete" Morgan, Arabella Cleveland, Jane Morrel, Amelia "Millie" Jones and Betsy Wyeth in 1968.

Special guests include Arthur “Casey” Cleveland, Arabella’s son, and Victoria Wyeth, Betsy Wyeth’s granddaughter.

“The Cannon Ball” features food, drink, a silent auction and a DJ. Admission is $85 for CFHS and Chadds Ford Business Association members, $95 for non-members. The silent auction will include works by Richard Bollinger and Tim Wadsworth.
