Police Log Jan. 10: Assault, thefts, hit and run

Pennsylvania State Police

• State police from the Avondale barracks said they arrested a 31-year-old woman for assaulting her 68-year-old parents. No names were released, but the report said the altercation was due to alcohol consumption. The incident happened just before 10 p.m. on Jan. 7 in East Marlborough Township.

• A 79-year-old man told state police that an unknown black man stole a wallet from a red purse in his shopping cart at 11:40 a.m. in Wegmans on Dec. 31.

• Someone stole purses left inside two vehicles at the Concord Township Dog Park on Dec. 24. Police said the unknown suspect fled the scene in a dark minivan. The incident happened approximately 12:20 p.m.

• State police said someone stole $1,205 from a locker at the Glen Mills Senior Living Home on Route 1 in Concord Township on Dec. 24. The money belonged to an 18-year-old woman.

• Police reported a hit and run accident in Concord Township on Dec. 23. A report said the unknown driver was traveling south on Temple Road at 12:30 p.m. when the vehicle crossed the double yellow line and into the oncoming lane of traffic, striking the side mirror of a northbound vehicle. The offending driver continued south on Temple to flee. The victim was uninjured, and police said they have no leads.

• Police from the Media barracks said Carolyn Sue Ciferni, 52, stole $350 worth of jewelry from Mykono's on Route 202 on Dec. 18. No other details were released.

• State police said they arrested Michael Garrison, 38, of Philadelphia, for criminal trespass after he was seen on both PECO and Concord Township property — at Marshall and Brinton Lake roads — at 4:25 p.m. on Dec. 7.

Southern Chester County Regional Police

• Jose A. Gavina-Mora, 36, of Hockessin, was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses, following a traffic stop for erratic driving, according to a police report. The incident occurred 9:30 p.m., on Dec. 30 at Kaolin Road, west of Limestone Road, in New Garden Township. The 2000 Chevrolet SUV was traveling westbound on Kaolin Road and crossed into the eastbound lane, nearly striking an oncoming Southern Chester County Regional Police Department patrol car, police said.

• Police arrested an 18-year-old from Claymont, on DUI and other charges on Dec. 29. The suspect is identified as Tyler B. Hower, according to the report. Police said Hower was stopped for failing to stay in the proper lane of traffic just after 1 a.m. in the 800 block of West Cypress Street in New Garden Township. According to the report, police then observed drug paraphernalia in plain view and detected the odors of an alcoholic beverage and marijuana emanating from the vehicle. In addition, Hower displayed indicators suggesting intoxication, police said.

• Roberto Lopez-Zavala, 31, of Kennett Square, was arrested and charged with DUI and related traffic offenses, following a traffic stop for erratic driving and an equipment violation, according to a report from the Southern Chester County Regional Police Department. The stop was made at 7:06 p.m. on Dec. in the 1000 block of Newark Road, in New Garden Township. Police said they observed numerous indicators suggesting intoxication and for safety reasons, police performed no field sobriety tests. Lopez-Zavala was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI. Chemical tests taken later showed a blood alcohol level of 0.251 percent.

• Southern Chester County Regional police charged Nicholas M. Gallo, 20, of Wilmington, with violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act and a traffic offense, in connection with a two-vehicle accident. The incident happened Dec. 17 at approximately. 6:09 p.m., at the intersection of Newark Road and Broad Run Road, in New Garden Township. According to the police report, the investigation revealed that Gallo had failed to yield at a posted stop sign and pulled out in front of an oncoming vehicle. While investigating the crash, police detected the strong odor of marijuana coming from the Mazda that Gallo was operating. A search of the vehicle produced a small amount of marijuana and related drug paraphernalia.

• Alex Larrea, 24, of Wilmington, was arrested and charged with DUI (drugs), as well as with violations of the Controlled Substance, Drug, Device, and Cosmetic Act, and two traffic offenses, following a traffic stop for moving violations. The incident occurred on Dec. 28 at 11:49 p.m., in the 200 block of Laurel Heights Road, in New Garden Township. Upon making contact with Larrea, police were met with the strong odor of marijuana from smoke that was billowing out of the vehicle and Larrea admitted to having smoked marijuana a short time earlier. Due to the extreme cold, field sobriety tests were aborted. Larrea was taken into custody, and a search of his person produced a bag containing a small amount of marijuana in his pocket. He was given an opportunity to submit to a chemical test of his blood but refused, the report said.
