Around Town April 13

• Saturday, April 22, is filled with local activities. Pennsbury Township will hold its annual yard sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Chadds Ford Township will have its annual recycling day in conjunction with the Civic Association’s road cleanup, which begins at 8 a.m. Additionally, the Young Friends of the Brandywine will be holding its cleanup of the banks along the Brandywine Creek.

• Surround yourself with wildflowers this spring at the 13th annual Wildflower Celebration at Mt. Cuba on Sunday, April 23. This daylong, free event invites people of all ages to learn and play in nature. Discover rare and beautiful wildflowers, observe tadpoles in the iconic ponds, and enjoy family-friendly activities at Mt. Cuba Center’s annual springtime festival. The first 1,000 families that attend the celebration will receive a free native plant to bring home. This year’s plant is Chocolate white snakeroot, or Ageratina altissima ‘Chocolate’, which blooms with small, white flowers in early September and delights all summer with deep burgundy leaves.

• The Kennett Square Resale Book Shoppe announces the launch of a photo contest for all ages in Chester County. The contest runs from April 15 through May 31. The staff and volunteers of the Kennett Square Resale Book Shoppe want to encourage the entire community to get involved and show through photographs how seniors contribute their talents, wisdom, and time in their local communities. Photo entries will be accepted from April 15 through May 30. Entries must be at least 8X10 and no larger than 11X14. Photos can be dropped off at the Kennett Square Resale Book Shoppe or the Kennett Area Senior Center, or mailed in a sturdy unbendable envelope to Photo Contest, c/o Kennett Square Resale Book Shoppe, 113 South Union Street, Kennett Square PA 19348, or to Photo Contest, c/o Kennett Area Senior Center, 427 S. Walnut Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348. There is a $2.00 entry fee for each photo submitted, and a limit of 5 photos per person. • The Delaware Nature Society will host an Earth Day celebration open to the public during its annual meeting on Saturday, April 22. The annual meeting will be held for members from 10 to 11 a.m. at Ashland Nature Center in the auditorium. Following the meeting will be several events in celebration of Earth Day free to the public from 11: a.m. to  2 p.m. The Earth Day celebration will include a variety of family-friendly events including guided hikes, live animals, and a hawk-watch. No registration is needed.

• Families and caregivers of individuals with intellectual disabilities are invited to an important information session on saving workshops as a choice for individuals. The session is 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26 at St. Anastasia Church, 3301 W. Chester Pike, Newtown Square, 19073 (in the social room below the church). The program is free and open to family members of clients at Melmark, Handi-crafters, Elwyn’s workshops including Bridgewater and Lansdowne, the Divine Providence programs and any program that is impacted by new waiver regulations. The forum is also open to support staff and families who have students transitioning from high school and might want to consider a workshop option. The meeting is free. • The Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County, Inc. invites you to join in the 22nd annual Chester County Race Against Violence-Family 5 K and 1 Mile Walk on Saturday, April 22, at 11 a.m. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and race starts at 11 a.m. at the Chester County Justice Center, 201 West Market Street in West Chester. Proceeds benefit victims of crime and violence. Registration is $20 in advance and $25 day of event. Chip timing is available. For registration visit www.runccrs.com.
