U-CFSD prepares for MLK Day

The Unionville-Chadds Ford School District will celebrate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 16 with the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Projects include Hillendale Elementary School collect school supplies, gently used books and backpacks to support the "Backpacks for MLK's Dream" Project. The HES children will help stuff the backpacks full of donated supplies and will also be making soup, sandwiches and cookies to be delivered to a local shelter for disadvantaged families and to the Catholic Social Services organization in West Grove.

There will be two sessions at Hillendale that day, 9-10 a.m. and then 10:15 to 11:15 a.m.

The Hillendale community is also looking for volunteers to cook soup, bake Cookies, make snack mix, make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, make place-mats, make cards, decorate bags and prepare backpacks.

CFES adopted a sister school in Philadelphia, the S. Weir Mitchell Elementary School. They collect and raise funds for the school all different ways throughout the year and have regular drop off times to support their students. They have also started a pen-pal project with them.  CFES decided to do this as a way of living MLK's vision throughout the year and as a demonstration of ongoing service to our community.

Unionville Elementary School will have its first MLK Day of Service with Blankets for Buddies.” In the UE cafeteria from 9:30-11:30 a.m., they will be making fleece blankets for children with long term illnesses at A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital. Participating families will be provided with a blanket-making kit so that parents and children can work together to make these special gifts for sick kids.

If you and your child are interested in participating, a Google sign up document will be circulated to UE families in the first week of January. You can also contact committee chairs Micki Tilley (micki.tilley@gmail.com) or Jackie Knight (jackieknight809@gmail.com).
