For many, Anson B. Nixon Park represents a hidden sanctuary of ponds, streams, fields and woodlands, tucked into a corner of Kennett Square Borough.

Comprised of more than 100 acres, the park, which opened in 1993 for passive recreation, contains land in both the borough and Kennett Township and hosts a variety of activities throughout the year, ranging from concerts to soccer games.

Whether you are an occasional concertgoer or a regular hiker in Anson B. Nixon Park, the Kennett Area Park Authority is seeking your feedback on what park improvements would be desirable and how to fund them.

KAPA, which was formed in 1988 as a joint municipal authority of Kennett Township and the Borough of Kennett Square took title to the lands that comprise Anson B. Nixon Park in 1990. A subsequent series of grants enabled KAPA to develop facilities in the park, located on North Walnut Street, just off of State Street.

A nonprofit support organization, KennParc (now Friends of Anson B. Nixon Park), was created in 1995 to raise funds for park maintenance, formulate infrastructure details, and organize programs. KAPA has no direct tax base for operational costs, and although the borough and township do provide funds to KAPA, this funding does not cover operational costs.

So the volunteers who keep the park going are seeking input from the people who take advantage of its myriad offerings, including a children's playground, five picnic pavilions, nearly three miles of trails with fitness stations, two sand volleyball courts, two bocce courts, a Frisbee golf course, ponds stocked annually for fishing, and a portable show mobile stage.
