Joanne E. Manning (nee Linder), 78, of West Chester, strong, beautiful and supportive mother and grandmother, died at home July 22, 2015. Loving mother of Susan McGowan (Michael), Chuck Manning (Lynn), Tom Manning (Dawne) and Carol Koehler (Al), from her first marriage to the late Charles R. Manning. Also survived by 11 adoring grandchildren. Married to her second husband, the late Frederick G. Schmidt, 1976 to 1986.
Mom's gifts included a caring ear and wise counsel, and many benefited. She enjoyed traveling, discussing the news, and indulging her evening sweet tooth.
Joanne was born in Philadelphia, to Elmer Linder and Anna Still Linder Jan. 28, 1937, the youngest of four children. She eloped at 18 in August of 1955 to Virginia, a marriage "validated" eight months later in a proper church. That same strong-willed and independent spirit also survives mom, across children and grandchildren.
After her first marriage ended in 1971, Joanne began a successful corporate career, working her way up to the manager of human resources for the I-T-E Imperial Corp. She was proud of her career, and the balancing act it required. Later, Joanne relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and became a registered nurse. She transferred her nurse’s license back to Pennsylvania in 1987, and provided compassionate care at Genesis HealthCare and Bryn Mawr Rehab. In later years, she worked as administrative assistant at Corrigan-Manning Co.
Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service Saturday Aug. 1, visitation 10 -11 a.m., service 11 a.m.-noon, at Donohue Funeral Home, 1627 West Chester Pike in West Chester.
