Fire marshal gets the axe

Chadds Ford Township has released Mike Daily from his duties as fire marshal. He was removed from the position on June 4.

According to Supervisors’ Chairman Frank Murphy, the township is trying to consolidate its code enforcement procedures under one roof, that being Building Inspection Underwriters. BIU is the company currently providing building inspections and code enforcement for the township.

Murphy said BIU does offer fire inspection services as well.

“It’s part of their scope, but there will be additional charges,” Murphy said.

He wasn’t sure what those charges would be, but explained those extra charges would be on a “per item basis.”

According to the township’s 2015 budget, the fire marshal’s position is allocated $8,250 in salary and an additional $1,500 for expenses.

Murphy added that fire marshal is also the wrong term to use, that “fire code official” is more accurate.

He deferred to fellow supervisor Samantha Reiner for more information because she was the one who handled the matter.

Reiner said the township would appoint Tom Nelling as fire marshal. Nelling is fire chief for the Concordville Fire Co. and is police chief in Birmingham Township.

The fire marshal and fire code officials review developers’ plans, inspect public buildings and advise residents of hazards, enforce burning ordinances, and investigate the cause of fires in coordination with the state police fire marshal or county district attorney’s office.

Reiner said Nelling would be responsible for ensuring developers’ plans provide for sufficient fire lanes around a public building, that there are sufficient fire hydrants and that there is sufficient water flow to those hydrants if the sprinkler system has kicked in.

BIU — acting as the fire code official — she said, would continue to ensure the proper placement and number of sprinklers and other aspects of inspections as is currently being done.

Daily, a career police officer in Chester Township, was appointed Chadds Ford’s fire marshal in April 2013. In addition to his law enforcement background, he brought with him more than 25 years of fire service experience, mostly in investigation.

“I enjoyed meeting the people of Chadds Ford and trying to keep them safe,” Daily said.
