A broken force main sewer line in Chadds Ford Township caused a minor traffic slowdown along Route 1 Saturday night, but sewer service in the village was not interrupted.

What was initially reported as a light trickle earlier in the day increased to the point where sewer water bubbled up along the southeast corner of Route 1 and Creek Road.

Township Manager Amanda Serock began contacting the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and other agencies in the morning. By 11:20 a.m., she said, the company Jurich Inc., a contractor for Delcora, confirmed the problem and began putting down silt socks along Creek Road to filter the water before it reached Harvey Run.

The leak worsened during the day, but Serock said nothing could be done until all necessary agencies were contacted. Work crews were digging up parts of the northbound shoulder of Route 1 by about 6 p.m. after PennDOT and Pennsylvania State Police were notified. Crews found the source of the leak by 9:30 p.m. and worked into the night to repair the damage.

Costs of the repair had not been determined, Serock said.

Restaurants in the village area were not inconvenienced and only passing motorists were aware of any work going on.

Northbound Route 1 traffic was funneled into the left lane while workers were on the scene.

Professionalism was very apparent last night at the scene of the sewer line break. Township Manager Amanda Serock took charge early and stayed with the issue until it was resolved. Conditions were trying and the situation was handled very well. As a public official, I was very pleased and impressed to see Amanda make important decisions with confidence. Chadds Ford Township residents are fortunate to have such a dedicated and conscientious individual as our Manager. Thanks so much Amanda for a job well done.
