Forecasters: More nasty weather on horizon

Updated at 1:50 p.m. with PennDOT speed limit restrictions

The Chester County Department of Emergency Services (CCDES) is encouraging residents to take action to prepare for another weekend of challenging weather.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter warning has been issued for the region starting at noon on Saturday, Feb. 22, and ending at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23. The area could receive anywhere from four to seven inches of snow. Temperatures will remain cold in the morning but will begin warming as the storm approaches from the west.

Precipitation is expected to begin as snow Saturday afternoon across the region, and as warmer air moves north, the snow will change briefly to sleet, then rain, from south to north. By evening, rain or a rain/snow/sleet mixture is expected in Philadelphia and points south, a transition that will take longer farther north.

Where rain makes contact with very cold surfaces, ice buildup could occur. However, the National Weather Service does not anticipate this as a widespread problem. Precipitation will end from west to east on Sunday as another arctic cold front moves in, bringing below-normal temperatures to the region for the beginning of the new week.

Due to the storm, PennDOT temporarily reduced the speed limit to 45 mph on several expressways in the Philadelphia region, including Interstates 76, 95, 476, 676;  Routes 1, 30, 202, and 422; and the Route 100 spur.

All buildings in the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District will close at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, said Superintendent John C. Sanville, adding any affected events would be rescheduled.

“It is important to be prepared for winter weather before it strikes to decrease your risk,” said Robert Kagel, director of the Chester County Department of Emergency Services in a press release. “We urge everyone to sign up for a text and email service called ReadyNotifyPA (www.readynotifypa.org), which allows county and municipal officials to send messages to cell phones, pagers or other email-enabled devices during an emergency.

“We also recommend that residents review and plan for any emergency by going to www.readychesco.org,” Kagel added. ReadyChesco.org promotes the preparation of Ready kits for any type of emergency and features checklists to help prepare kits, especially for specific needs such as the elderly, businesses, people with specials needs, and pets.
