Long-awaited roundabout to open Friday

After months of detours and some delays, PennDOT  announced that it will open the new roundabout at the intersection of Route 52 (Lenape Road), Wawaset Road, and Lenape Unionville Road in Pocopson Township late Friday afternoon, Dec. 19.

“The new roundabout will move traffic safely and efficiently between these three roadways by reducing travel speeds, reducing conflict points, and making it easier for drivers to choose their route,” PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said in a press release.

According to PennDOT, roundabouts offer improved safety over other forms of intersections and typically carry about 30 percent more vehicles than similarly sized intersections during peak travel times. Roundabouts also improve pedestrian safety by allowing pedestrians to cross a single lane of slow, one-way traffic at a time, .

The roundabout on Route 52, which was designed by Pocopson Township, is the first built by PennDOT in southeastern Pennsylvania. The roundabout replaces the former triangular intersection where the three roads previously connected. Construction began in January.

PennDOT’s contractor constructed the roundabout in three phases. During the first two phases, crews excavated, realigned and widened the approaching roadways. The single-lane roundabout was then constructed during phase three. Crews also built a center island and installed new storm water drainage, pavement markings, lighting and signs. The landscaping will be completed in the spring, the release said.

Road-Con Inc. of West Chester served as the general contractor on the $2,151,848.35 project, which is financed with 100 percent federal funds.
