Predawn push-ups pay off for Sheriff’s staff

Proving that they are extraordinarily fit to serve Chester County residents, 20 deputies and security personnel received recognition recently for meeting Sheriff Carolyn “Bunny” Welsh’s annual Superior Fitness Challenge, a county press release said.

Members of the Sheriff's Department received pins for winning the fitness challenge.
Winners of the Chester County Sheriff's Superior Fitness Challenge received pins that they will wear on their uniforms.

The challenge requires all the deputies to complete 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, five pull- ups, a double nine-story stair climb with weighted vest, 5 1⁄2-foot wall climb, 150 lb. dummy drag and then a final 2.5 mile formation run – a regimen that begins at 5 a.m.

A sergeant, four corporals, 14 deputies and one security officer all completed the challenge before they began their normal workday.

“It is great to see the dedication to fitness of many members of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Welsh. “These men and women have demonstrated their commitment to maintaining their fitness. Many who were recognized this year were recipients of this award over the last several years.”

Corporal Joseph Woulfe, the fitness coordinator who oversees the fitness challenge said that the test measures physical abilities as well as teamwork, dedication and determination. “It is very gratifying to see this much participation because a lot of hard work goes into showing everybody just how important living a healthy lifestyle is, both personally and professionally,” Woulfe said.

The deputies recognized this year were Sgt. Adam Sibley; Corporals Joseph Woulfe, Ashley Bosch, William Carter, and Noah Hughes; Deputies James Aubry, David Barbone, Kevin Brough, Michael Cabry, Kevin Deegan, Anthony DeTore, Enrique Garcia, John Heisler, Kevin Leary, Noah Robinson, Michael Sarro, Kevin Thompson, Ryan White, and Robert Wilson; and Security Officer Kevin Skymba.

“This is another example of the continuing efforts for excellence here in the Chester County Sheriff’s Office. I am extremely proud and very privileged to lead such an extraordinary agency,” said Welsh.

Woulfe is already planning to make sure that none of the winners get complacent. “My committee and I are going to continue to work hard to make this event even better and more challenging next year,” he said.
