Bomb threat at school proves unfounded

A bomb threat prompted Kennett Township Police to evacuate an elementary school on Friday morning, Oct, 17, a threat that ultimately proved unfounded.

Police said they responded to Greenwood Elementary at 10:38 a.m. after a school employee found a note in a restroom. The written note implied a threat to “blow” up the school, a police press release said.

“We consider bomb threats to be very serious,” said Police Chief, Albert J. McCarthy in the release. “Thankfully, no explosive devices were located during the search of the Greenwood Elementary School.”

McCarthy said his department appreciated the assistance of the Chester County Sheriff ‘s Department, which providing bomb-sniffing dogs and handlers to search the school; Pennsylvania State Police; Kennett Square Borough Police; Longwood Fire Department; Longwood EMS; and Kennett Square EMS.

“We would also like to thank the community for their support and understanding during this incident,” said McCarthy, adding that Kennett Township Manager Lisa Moore immediately authorized the use of any township resources.

McCarthy said that after the school was evacuated, students and staff were all accounted for within minutes. A sweep of both the inside and grounds of the school did not turn up any explosives, he said.

During the incident, students and staff were provided food, water and restroom facilities, and normal school operations resumed after the search ended. The incident remains under investigation, and McCarthy said extra police patrols would be utilized as a precautionary measure.
