Police Log Aug. 7: Fire destroys Chadds Ford home; cat given heroin

• A late night fire destroyed a two-story home on Camly Lane in Chadds Ford Township on Aug. 4. Neighbors said the blaze broke out about 11 p.m. while the family was away on vacation. Homes on Camly Lane are up a hill from Creek Road and there are no fire hydrants in the area. Creek Road resident Andy Bell said tanker trucks had to fill a portable tank with water for firefighters to use in combatting the blaze. Chadds Ford Township Fire Marshal Mike Daly said the cause of the fire is under investigation. Seven fire companies, including Concordville Fire Co. responded.

• Concordville Fire Co. was also one of three fire companies responding to fire calls from homes on Pond View in Kennett Township on Aug. 7. According to homeowners, PECO crews were swapping out a meter when there was an arc, followed by a small fire. The resident said works crews quickly extinguished that fire, but smoke spread to two other homes. There were no injuries.

• Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan and West Whiteland Police Chief Joseph Catov announced the arrest of James Myers, 24, of West Chester, for animal cruelty and drug charges. The defendant was caught in the process of abusing a kitten. The kitten had been choked with a rope, was bleeding, and had been given heroin. The defendant was in possession of heroin and heroin paraphernalia. Hogan referred to the incident action as, “a singularly depraved act.”

In a separate press release, the Chester County SPCA is seeking donations to help cover the medical expenses for the kitten, now being called Hope. The kitten is still recovering at the veterinary clinic in Malvern and eventually will be transferred to the Chester County SPCA and into an already-designated foster home. The kitten will not be available for adoption until it has made a full recovery. Go to the Chester County SPCA’s Web site  www.ccspca.org to donate to the care of this special survivor.

• 27-year-old Joseph Edward Kordalski, of Claymont, was arrested for DUI on July 31. A police report said Kordalski was stopped at 1:25 a.m. for a registration violation on Route 202 at Dilworthtown Road.

• State police are investigating a hit and run accident on Route 202 involving an 82-year-old woman from Hockessin. A report said the victim, who was not injured, was driving south in the left hand lane of Route 202 when another southbound vehicle, in the right lane, made a left hand turn onto eastbound Smithbridge Road, striking the victim’s car in the process. The offending driver fled the scene without exchanging information with the victim. The incident happened at 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 3.

• No injuries were reported following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of routes 926 and 52 in Pennsbury Township on the morning of July 31. State police said a Ford F-150 pickup truck was departing the Sunoco station when it was struck by an oncoming vehicle traveling west on 926. Police said the Ford driver was cited.

• Retail theft charges were filed against 37-year-old Jarvis Laron Corbin, of Wilmington. Police said they received a call from the Wawa at Route 202 and Naamans’ Creek Road that someone was stealing food. Corbin was identified, the report said, and he admitted to taking the food. The incident happened 1:50 p.m. on July 30.

• Careless driving is the cause of a two-vehicle accident on Marshal Road near James Hayward Road on July 30. A 2006 Ford Mustang was attempting to make a left turn onto a private driveway on Marshal when it was struck by a Chrysler Grand Cherokee. Police said the driver of the Cherokee didn’t notice the Mustang.

• Police are investigating the theft of five pairs of eyeglasses from the Pearl Vision Center on Evergreen Drive in Concord Township. The stolen property is valued at $1,890.

• Someone stole a cell phone from a shoe rack at the Sky Zone on July 14.

• Jonathan Alexander Triggs, 22, of Upper Chichester, was arrested for DUI on Aug. 1. A police report said Triggs was seen sleeping in his vehicle on the shoulder of Route 202 at Route 1 shortly before 3 a.m. Police determined him to be DUI, the report said.

• One person was injured in a two-car accident on Route 1 at Brinton Lake Road on July 23. Police said a 20-year-old man from Kennett Square was transported to Riddle Memorial Hospital with minor injuries after his car was struck at the intersection. According to the report, the victim was driving southbound in the left hand lane of Route 1 when a northbound car driven by Johnny Rijsemus, 37, of Glen Mills, turned left and hit the southbound car. Rijsemus’ car then spun counterclockwise, coming to rest in the southbound lanes.
