During the event, Barrar gave check for $500 to the Garnet Valley Football team. The money will e used for the team’s weight room.

• The Civic Association of Chadds Ford Township is accepting applications for its 2014 scholarship award of $1,000. Applications are due April 18. All resident high school students whose families are members of the Civic Association are eligible. Application forms may be obtained by e-mailing contactus@chaddsfordcivicassn.org

Upland Country Day School is hosting an open house for the community on Saturday, April 26 from 9 to 11 a.m. Visitors will tour the 23-acre campus including the ice rink, classrooms, athletic fields, art studios and science labs. • Chester County’s annual Camp Cadet golf outing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 29, at Applecross Country Club in Downingtown. The event benefits Camp Cadet, a summer camp for Chester County youth designed to promote a positive relationship between the community and police. • The Chester County Board of Commissioners announced the availability of low-interest economic injury disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration, for small businesses affected by the severe winter storms which occurred from February 3-28. Applications and program information are available by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 (1-800-877-8339) for the deaf and hard-of-hearing), or by sending an email to disastercustomerservice@sba.gov. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela. Loan applications can also be downloaded from SBA’s website at www.sba.gov/disaster.

• The Center for the Creative Arts (CCArts) in Yorklyn, kicks off a new program, the Artist Showcase, on Friday, April 11. It features artwork and live music. The evening begins at 5:30 pm with an opening reception of members, youth and faculty art. More than 100 works will be on display and judged by Michael East, area coordinator of Fine Arts at Delaware College of Art & Design. Also a special show will introduce emerging artist Wayne Howard, whose photography is based on his experience coaching Wounded Warriors. There will also be live music, light refreshments and a cash bar. This will be the debut of a new Friday night performance series at CCArts called Yorklyn Live.

• Mindfulness-based stress reduction classes are now being offered at the Crozer Medical Plaza at Brinton Lake. Classes at Brinton Lake will take place Monday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning April 28 and running through June 23.The classes are part of a 9-week long program designed to help participants critical life-long stress management skills to reduce stress, improve health and increase the quality of life. The standard cost of the program is $495. This includes 27 hours of instruction over nine weeks (including one full-day session), a textbook, study manual, and a series of recorded meditations. • On Saturday, April 26, area YMCAs will celebrate Healthy Kids Day. The day will feature free events throughout the community to inspire kids to keep their minds and bodies active. From 11 a.m. until 2:00 pm, YMCA of the Brandywine Valley and YMCA of the Upper Main Line Y branches will feature games, healthy snacks, arts and crafts, fitness and/or dance demonstrations, and more to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home. YMCA Healthy Kids Day is the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being. The Kennett Area YMCA will head to Downtown Kennett Square on Broad Street, between Cypress and Mulberry Streets. The West Chester Area YMCA and Oscar Lasko Youth Program Center will host their festivities together at West Chester East High School.
