Sigurd Simcox Swensson, formerly of Chadds Ford

Sigurd Simcox Swensson died on March 26, 2014.

The son of Earl E. and Viola Simcox Swensson, he was born in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1926. He grew up in Old Hickory, Tenn. and Richmond, Va. and graduated from high school in Fairfield, Conn. He joined the US Navy V12 Program at the University of Washington, graduating as ensign with an electronic engineering degree in 1945 and was honorably discharged as a lieutenant junior grade. Between 1946 and '48, he taught electrical engineering at Va. Tech University, earning a bachelor's of science degree in industrial engineering with top honors, as well as an a masters in industrial engineering.

Sigurd worked for the DuPont Co. for 38 years, including: 19 years in management positions in the Fibers Department in Waynesboro, Va.; Seaford, Del.; Camden, S.C. and Wilmington; 10 years as general services personnel manager, Wilmington; and six years as general manager of the DuPont Country Club.

In addition to his leadership positions with the DuPont Co., Sigurd was a Presbyterian Elder in Camden, S.C.; president of Wilmington Rotary Club; president of Delaware Swedish Colonial Society; president of the Delaware Club Managers; board member on Ingleside Homes and Delaware Technical Community College and chairman of the Board of Supervisors of Chadds Ford Township.

For 33 years, Sigurd sang with the Aldersgate Choir in Wilmington and on tour in England; Singing City Chorus in Philadelphia and New York; The Mary Green Singers in Italy; Ardensingers; and Opera Delaware's Family Opera Theater in Wilmington. He lived an active sporting life, including hunting with good friends and his prize Brittany spaniels; playing golf around the U.S., England and Scotland; and winning the Seaford, Del. Country Club Tennis Championship five times.

Sigurd is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Dickenson Swensson; his children: Lisë and husband Dan Smith of Hickory, N.C.; Karen and husband Rob Luisana of Greensboro, N.C.; Erik and wife Edy Schlossstein of McMinnville, Ore.; and Jon of Tampa, Fla.; sister LaZelle and Ira Bontrager of Springfield, Ill.; brother Earl and Sue Dickenson Swensson of Nashville, Tenn.; his grandchildren: Carl and Lauren Swensson, and John Earl and Bryan Luisana; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 2313 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE 19803 on Saturday March 29, at 2 pm. There will be a reception in the auditorium at Aldersgate following the service. Interment will be private.
