Jessie Magda Tyson Oas Pennington, formerly of Pocopson

Jessie Magda Tyson Oas Pennington, 99, of Summerville, S.C. and formerly of Pocopson, died Feb. 19, at home. Jessie was the wife of the late Maurice L. Pennington, Sr., with whom she shared 49 years of marriage until his death in May of 1982.

Born in Chadds Ford, on Dec. 28, 1914, Jessie was the first of thirteen children born to the late Mary Marguerite Tyson and the late Gustav Oas.

In her early years Jessie worked at Yeatman’s Greenhouses, the Kennett Cannery, and at The Feed Mill at Lenape for Mr. Copeland. She finished her employment as a switchboard operator for Longwood Gardens. Jessie was a 52-year member of the Eastern Star, serving as worthy matron of the Kennett Square chapter from 1968 through 1969. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Longwood Fire Co. Jessie was well known for her talents of knitting, cross-stitch and embroidery. Mittens, hats, scarves and sweaters were her specialties for children. Her greatest joy was taking care of her mother and also her brother, Mickey. Jessie’s excellent cooking included oven-baked fried chicken and rice pudding with raisins.

Jessie was the loving mother of Elaine Oas Gochnauer (R.C./Bob) of Summerville, S.C. and Maurice L. Pennington, Jr. (Barbara/Tinker) of West Chester.

Jessie was the grandmother of Patricia Gochnauer Huffman, Robert Clyde Gochnauer, Mark Allen (Rusty) Gochnauer (deceased), Larry Francis Gochnauer, Craig Lee Pennington, Faith Amanda Pennington Larson, Jeremy Nathaniel Pennington and Eric Taylor Pennington (deceased).

Jessie was the great grandmother of Bradley Gochnauer, Georgianna North, Nicholas Gochnauer, Christian Gochnauer, Meredith Sakoda, Hannah Pennington, Luke Pennington, Alexa Pennington, Matthew Larson, Jackson Pennington, Noah Larson, Colin Pennington and Tyler Pennington.

Jessie was the great-great grandmother of Ava Jayde Gochnauer and Alexander Bartow North.

Jessie is survived by sisters Hannah Rebecca Quinn of Phoenixville, Jane Teter (William) of Parkesburg and Dorothy Banner (Lad) of Pasadena, Md.; brothers Frank of Atglen, Charles (Ann) of Kennett Square and Jack (Jean) of Avon Park, Fla.; and brothers-in-law, James Clark and Harvey Journey and sister-in-law, Josie Parman.

Predeceased are sisters are Sarah Donia and her husband Frank, Elizabeth (Betty) Journey and Eleanor Clark; brothers Carl and his wife Jean, Walter (Pete) and his wife Dorothy and Alfred (Mickey).

Jessie was also survived by numerous, numerous nieces and nephews and she loved the challenge of trying to remember all their names.

The calling hour will be Tuesday morning between 10 and 11:30 on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home located at 250 West State Street, Kennett Square, PA 19348 followed by a service at noon. Interment will be in Longwood Cemetery, Kennett Square immediately following the service.
