Longwood Rotary Club's Around the World Gala scheduled for March 22, 2014, will take the beautiful Longwood Gardens Conservatory on an international adventure with entertainment and food from all over the globe.  The evening's dazzling entertainment features inspired African drum music by the Griots Wa Umoza drumming quartet, fascinating Chinese Lion Dancers from the Chinese American Community Center Dragon and Lion Dancers Club and fiery Spanish flamenco dancing by the award-winning Ramon de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theatre.

Throughout the evening guests will enjoy dinner stations featuring foods from Brazil, Mexico, Spain, France, Australia, Africa, Mongolia, Japan and Korea. In addition, guests can dance the night away to tunes from all eras introduced by an energetic DJ from the Tom Barrett studio who is happy to honor requests. Guests can also bid for fabulous items at the always-popular silent auction featuring original art, sports tickets and memorabilia, jewelry, wine collections, vacation homes and an abundance of varied and delightful gift baskets.

Funds raised through the Longwood Rotary Club Annual Gala are invested primarily in the local community. In 2013 more than $50,000 was allocated to a variety of projects and to local nonprofit organizations. Longwood Rotary Club was the principal contributor to the new Anson B. Nixon Park playground in Kennett Square. Significant funds were also donated to the Kennett Area Food Cupboard, The Garage youth program, the Kennett Area Senior Center, the Kennett Area YMCA Good Kids Campaign, Camp Dreamcatcher, and other worthy causes.

Gala performances will start with a salute to Africa by the Griots Wa Umoza drumming quartet led by Kamau Ngom. Mr. Ngom has studied with a variety of master musicians from multiple music genres, including John Hines, Arthur Hall, Robert “Boysie” Lowerie and Kulu Mele. He has performed with the Boysie Lowerie Big Band, Arthur Hall African-American Drum and Dance Ensemble and other well-known groups.

Chinese Lion Dancers from the CACC Dragon and Lion Dancers Club will then transport everyone to China with a colorful 2,000-year-old dance presentation. Lion Dances are performed to celebrate happy occasions like the arrival of a New Year, festivals, weddings, birthdays and various special events. The CACC Dancers have been performing at major happenings throughout the Tri-State area for more than 20 years.

Next, the Ramon de los Reyes Spanish Dance Theatre will take everyone to Spain with spirited flamenco music and dancing. Ramon de los Reyes was born and raised in Madrid, where he began Spanish dance at the age of seven. An active performer his whole life, Ramon has toured Europe and North, Central and South America with several dance companies. In 1968 Ramon was awarded an honorary Olympic Gold medal by the International Olympic Committee for his contribution to the Olympic Games in Mexico City. He has performed at the White House and on numerous television shows in Mexico, the United States, Canada and Spain.
