Matthew (Matt) Michael Hickey of Kennett Square

Matthew (Matt) Michael Hickey, 71, of Kennett Square, died suddenly at his home on Thursday, Nov. 28. He was the husband of Mary Breslin Hickey, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.

Born in Glen Cove, N.Y., he was a son of the late Thomas Hickey and the late Ruth Senker Hickey.

Matt attended the University of Pennsylvania and earned degrees from St. John’s University and St. Joseph’s University.

Matt worked for the Chester County Intermediate Unit as director of Educational Support Services for 16 years. For the past 12 years, he was a proposal specialist for the Chester County Economic Development Council. He enjoyed meeting and working with business leaders in Chester County.

Matt loved to spend time at his beach house in Lewes, Del., and he and his wife traveled extensively.

Survivors include, in addition to his wife: one son, Brendan M. Hickey of West Chester; one daughter, Erin Marie Grubb (Brian) of Downingtown; three brothers, Thomas Hickey of Birdsboro, Anthony Hickey (Sharon) of Asheville, N.C. and Joseph Hickey (Faye) alsao of Asheville; three sisters, Kathleen DiSanto of Tampa, Fla. Sheila Elliott (Bruce) of Waterford, Conn. and Christine Iorio (Vinnie) of Vt.  He also had one grandson, Sean Patrick Hickey, of Nicaragua.

Matt was predeceased by his son, Timothy Finian Hickey, in 2012, and by Matt’s two sisters, Laura and Damian.

Matt will be remembered for his beautiful smile, his friendly, outgoing personality, his warmth and generosity and devotion to his family.

You are invited to visit with Matt’s family from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, and from 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5 at the Kuzo & Grieco Funeral Home Inc. (610-444-4116) 250 W. State St. Kennett Square, PA 19348.  His Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 212 Meredith St. Kennett Square.  Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. Contributions in his memory may be made to the "Timothy Finian Hickey Memorial Scholarship," Delaware County Community College Educational Foundation, 901 South Media Line Road, Media, PA 19063.
