Margaret Mary Truitt Ferver of Chadds Ford

Margaret Mary Truitt Ferver of Chadds Ford Margaret "Peggy" Ferver (nee Truitt) died on Oct. 8, in southern Florida at the age of 78.

Peggy was beautiful inside and out; her wonderful smile, bright blue eyes, sense of fun and ability to see the best in everyone endeared her to all. She was born Margaret Mary Truitt, the second of 8 children, on Feb. 14, 1935 in Wilmington, to Margaret and Joseph Truitt also of Wilmington.

Peggy attended P.S. DuPont High School where she held the office of vice president of the student body. She graduated in 1952. The high school was also where she met her future husband Allan Francis Ferver Jr.

Prior to their marriage in 1956, Peggy worked for five years at E.I. duPont de Nemours and Company in Wilmington. She said later that she had loved working at duPont in part because of the many close friends she made there. Although barely 5 foot 2 inches tall, Peggy possessed a remarkable vivaciousness. Not only did she and her husband Allan "Mike" Ferver raise six children: Allan, Michael, James, Amy, John and Lincoln (named after a close family friend, not the U.S. president), she was extremely active in the community, and pursued hobbies with abandon. She and a small cadre of friends started what would eventually become the Chadds Ford Historical Society to preserve significant colonial buildings and the history of the Brandywine Valley. She was also active in Chadds Ford Area Woman's Club, Brandywine Gardeners Club and a multitude of school activities.

As a very early advocate of healthy eating, Peggy cultivated a large garden of unusual herbs, flowers, shrubs and vegetables, anticipating a trend that continues today. Peggy's close relationships to others were central to her life, and were her greatest joy. Her sisters, brothers, husband, children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great granddaughter and her many friends will all miss this uniquely kind, loving woman. We were so fortunate to have known her because she enriched our lives so much.

She is survived by her husband, Allan "Mike" Ferver as well as her seven siblings, Joanne, Joseph, Kathryn, Patricia, Mary, Barbara and John. She is also survived by their six children previously mentioned, by 14 grandchildren, and by one great-granddaughter.

In her later years, Peggy and husband Mike split their time between Chadds Ford (where they raised their family), and Florida, in the "snowbird" tradition. She remained active in organizations such as The Audubon Society, and enjoyed studying Florida's rich biodiversity including birdlife, butterflies, plants and other native species. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Chadds Ford Historical Society, P.O. Box 27, Chadds Ford, PA 19317, phone (610) 388-7376; or the Alzheimer Foundation at: http://www.alz.org/
