| Artist, architect and social activist Rockwell Kent is the subject of an acclaimed documentary to be screened at Brandywine River Museum on October 12 at 1 p.m. The film includes both historical and on-location footage of Kent's adventurous journeys, interspersed with his breathtaking works of art created over seven decades. Director Frederick Lewis will introduce the film.Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) traveled to remote locations such as Alaska and Tierra del Fuego in pursuit of personal challenges-recording his intrepid exploits in words and pictures and achieving celebrity status when they were published. He created masterful, highly evocative work for nearly 50 books. Kent had enormous influence on the art of his time and on later artists, including members of the Wyeth family, in particular Jamie Wyeth. The museum's current exhibition, Jamie Wyeth, Rockwell Kent and Monhegan, featuring works by the artist, is on view through November 24.
During the 10 years director Frederick Lewis worked on this documentary, he retraced the peripatetic artist/adventurer's many travels, shooting footage in Greenland, Newfoundland, Alaska, Ireland and Russia. He also hired a 56-ft. boat with crew and recreated Kent's attempt to sail to Cape Horn. The result is a definitive documentary that puts Kent's complex career and myriad achievements in perspective. The Washington Post called this documentary, "a sweeping, detailed, visually rich portrait of a man who emerges as a complex, compelling and finally contradictory force of nature, a charismatic reflection of the eras in which he lived."
Frederick Lewis, an associate professor in the School of Media Arts & Studies at Ohio University, will introduce the film. Prior to the screening, associate curator Amanda C. Burdan will lead a curator's tour of the exhibition, Rockwell Kent, Jamie Wyeth and Monhegan at noon.

The Brandywine River Museum, located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, is open daily (except Christmas Day) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors ages 65 and over, $6 for children ages 6 and older and free for children 5 and younger and Brandywine Conservancy members.
