Laura Ashton Turpin (née Brown) was born on Oct. 25, 1914, in Unionville, and died peacefully on May 1, at Brandywine Senior Living at Longwood in Kennett Square, Pa.

Laura was the daughter of Evan Brown and Lillie Gunn Brown. Known to her family as “Aunt Lolly,” Laura lived as a child on Rt. 842 before moving to her home in Marlborough Village at age 6.  She lived in that same house for 89 years.

Educated at Unionville School, Laura worked for many years in her family’s greenhouses in Marlborough Village. She was not only an expert on plants, flowers, and living things, but she had an incredible gift for arranging flowers.

She married Harry D. “Dee” Turpin in 1937 and together they shared 51 years of marriage until Dee’s death in 1989. Laura and Dee were active in the outdoors, dancing, card playing, bowling, and generally enjoying life. Both were active in the Po-Mar-Lin Fire Company and East Lynn Grange in Unionville where they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1987. Laura never slowed down in her activities. In recent years she continued to work at Barnard’s Orchard on Route 842 where she made flower arrangements and fruit baskets and cut flowers in the greenhouse.

Laura was also an avid and skillful card player, her favorite game being pinochle, although recently she had mastered bridge and was soon beating old hands at the game. Laura was a loyal Phillies fan and also enjoyed playing bingo with her friends, most recently at Brandywine Senior Living and all who came to visit her there. Laura was a member of the Marlborough Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. All who knew Laura realize that not only could she be counted on to know everyone, but also to know the local news and happenings.

She is survived by two nieces and a nephew, Dorothy Herrman (née Brown) of Marlborough Village, Raymond Brown of Williamsburg, Va., and Marian Hopkins (née Brown) of Easton, Md., as well as by a number of great, great-great, and great-great-great nieces and nephews. Additionally Laura is survived by her cat, Manet, and many, many dear friends.
