The Pennsylvania Senate State Government Committee approved on March 19 legislation authored by state Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi, R-9, of Chester, to make campaign finance reports available to the public more quickly by requiring the reports to be filed electronically.
“This bill will increase transparency and cut costs,” Pileggi said in a press release. “We should make this change now so the new requirements are in place well before the 2014 campaign season begins.”
Senate Bill 120 would require all candidates for statewide office and the General Assembly to file electronic campaign reports. At least 30 states have a similar requirement in place. In Pennsylvania, the Department of State encourages electronic filing, but there is no mandate. Electronic reporting will eliminate the time-consuming and costly need to manually enter information from paper filings.
Pileggi’s bill will also require campaign committees that raise or spend more than $10,000 in a month to report more frequently.
The State Government Committee also approved Senate Bill 37, legislation sponsored by Sen. Lloyd Smucker, R-13, to create an online voter registration system in Pennsylvania.
“I’m a co-sponsor of Senator Smucker’s bill and I strongly support it,” Pileggi said. “Allowing voters to register online is another common-sense way to save taxpayer funds.”
