Erik Hemmingsen of Kennett Square

Erik Hemmingsen, 95, of Kennett Square, died Dec. 30.

He was professor of mathematics at Syracuse University from 1947 to 1987, and chair of its math department in the 1970s.

His parents brought him to the US from Denmark in 1919. As a child he sailed with his father, captain of a four-masted schooner, and later was a cabin boy several times in summers on Danish freighters. He received a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania while employed by the Department of the Navy during World War II. He was an avid woodworker, still making furniture when in his 90s.

He is survived by Louise, his wife of 66 years, of Kennett Square, a daughter, Kirsten Johnson of Baltimore, Md., a son, Carl Hemmingsen of Bordentown, N.J., two grandchildren and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held at the Kendal-Crosslands community in Kennett Square on Jan. 27 at 2 p.m..
