John Silvasi Sr. of Drexel Hill

John Silvasi Sr., 97, died on Tuesday, Nov. 13. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, his daughter, Anne Marie Cake; three sisters; and two brothers.
He had been a resident of Broomall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center for the past year and a half.
Born in Freeland, John attended the Mining and Mechanical Institute for high school, later graduating from the University of Pennsylvania.
He served in the Army during World War II and saw combat in Italy and Germany.
He worked for many years as a test chemist at DuPont's Marshall Lab in Philadelphia.
He served as an usher at St. Bernadette Church in Drexel Hill and up to the time of his death as a beloved member of the board of directors of the Christian C. Sanderson Museum in Chadds Ford.
His passions were painting, mostly watercolors, and classical music. He learned to play violin as a child, and later in life taught himself to play cello .
He is survived by his son, John, and wife, Katharine; son-in-law, Peter Cake; grandchildren, Gabriel Silvasi, Laura Soule and husband, Owen; Daniel and Sean Cake.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral Saturday, Nov. 17 at 9 a.m. at St. Bernadette of Lourdes Church, 1035 Turner Ave., Drexel Hill. Funeral Mass will follow at 10. Interment at Old St. John Cemetery, Freeland.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Bernadette of Lourdes or the Christian C. Sanderson Museum, Chadds Ford.
