Richard C. Layton of Wilmington

Richard C. Layton, 83, of Wilmington, died at home on Oct. 14, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Layton served in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean War and, using the G.I. bill, attended the Philadelphia College of Art in Philadelphia for two years upon his return. He studied art with Frank E. Schoonover, Carolyn Wyeth and with his mentor and friend Andrew Wyeth. He was the first curator of the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford.

Mr. Layton was co-founder of the Brandywine Arts Festival and the Greenville Arts Festival. His works are widely owned by individuals and corporations including the over-mantel painting at the former Buckley's Tavern. He designed the 1973 American Bicentennial coin issued by the U.S. Mint. He was an emeritus board member of the Christian C. Sanderson Museum in Chadds Ford. He was honored by the City of Wilmington in 2008 with the Jefferson Award for Public Service to the Arts.

He is survived by his wife Deborah, children Marcia (Charles) Turner, Jonathan (Abigail) Layton, five grandchildren; sisters Janet (Richard) Hess, Carolyn (Don) Jones and brother David (Claire) Layton.

A memorial service will be held at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, 719 Shipley Street, Wilmington, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, followed by interment at the Cathedral Church of St. John Garden of Praise at Christ Church Christiana Hundred. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Richard's name to the Christian C. Sanderson Museum, P. O. Box 153, Chadds Ford, PA 19317.
