Louis E. Guerrina of Avondale

Louis E. Guerrina, 92, of Avondale, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford. He was the husband of Mary Olivieri Guerrina, with whom he shared 70 years of marriage.

Born in Mount Airy, he was the son of the late Alexander and Isabella Baratta Guerrina.

He was a self-employed stonemason and was the owner of L.G. Co. in Philadelphia.

He was drafted in the ROTC in 1941 and was commissioned to the Army Calvary for one year. Lou then joined the Air Force as a second lieutenant.  In 1942, he became a bombardier and served in this assignment for three years. He flew 50 missions over Europe and North Africa, during World War II and was a member of the 483rd Bombardier Group.

He was a member of St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church in Avondale, the Italian American Club, the American Legion, the Delaware Saengerbund, and the NRA.

Louis enjoyed hunting, Italian music, especially playing the accordion, singing, and being with his family and friends. He was an avid reader, especially keeping up with current events and politics in the newspapers and reading history books. He loved sharing his knowledge of history with others.

In his younger years he made wine, sausage, and vinegar for his family and friends.

He enjoyed helping make homemade spaghetti and raviolis, and in the late summer he looked forward to canning tomatoes.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Marie Guerrina of Avondale, and Rita Tattersall and her husband, Tom, of Landenberg; one brother, Alexander Guerrina of Egg Harbor, N.J.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by one son, Louis E. Guerrina, Jr.

You are invited to visit with his family and friends from 10 to 11 on Monday morning, Sept. 17, at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother Church, 8910 Gap Newport Pike (Route 41), in Avondale. His Mass of Christian Burial will follow. Burial will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Route 82, in Kennett Square.
