Patricia Ruth Merner, 85, of Avondale, died Tuesday Aug. 14. She was the widow of Dr. Richard R. Merner with whom she shared 58 precious years of marriage.
Born in Lebanon and raised in Myerstown, Pa., Patty graduated from Cedar Crest College and worked as activities director for the nursing school at what was then the Wilmington Hospital in Wilmington, prior to her lifelong calling as wife, mother, and grandmother. Patty was known for her talents in the arts, particularly in home decorating and gardening. She was a skilled hostess for both family events and group celebrations. She also had surprising talents in fishing (muskellunge) and marksmanship (skeet).
More than anything else, she was a person who experienced the saving grace of her Lord, and was gracious in sharing love with all she encountered. She had an ability to listen and empathize and encourage that fostered the love of many outside her family who considered her as close as a mother and felt her maternal love toward them. Patty was a president of the Board of Deacons at Avondale Presbyterian Church and co-leader of several dozen Spirit Alive conferences where she shared her message of love and prayer.
Patricia is survived by her brother R.T., two daughters, Laurie Dillon and Rici Harden and two granddaughters, Elizabeth K. Dillon and Tallie Miller and her husband Ryan, along with dear nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to visit starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Avondale Presbyterian Church, 420 Pennsylvania Avenue in Avondale. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.
