Frank Oscar Cassell, 86, of West Grove, died Wednesday, June 13 at Ware Presbyterian Village in Oxford.

While he spent his later years in Chester County, he was always a Delco boy at heart. Born in Chester, to Charles and Letitia Cassell, he could rattle off every street, building and notable name from Lower Chichester to Upper Darby, and everywhere in between. With an 86-year-old memory better than most 26-year-olds, he never forgot a name or a face.

Frank graduated from Chester High School in 1943, and entered the United States Navy where he served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. As the most handsome of sailors, he landed the most beautiful of belles. He married Betty Schureman, also of Chester, in October of 1950. They shared 55 years of marriage, and an eternal and enduring love found by few. Betty died in 2006.

The couple built their lives in Aston, where they raised their three children, Jackie Battinieri, Susan Heavens, and James Cassell. Frank was the embodiment of what it means to be a good husband and father. There aren’t enough obituary columns in the world to capture what he meant to his wife and children.

Some years after retiring from his longstanding career at Sun Oil in Marcus Hook, Frank and Betty moved to Chester County to be closer to their beloved grandchildren. He was instantly a well-known man in the community, attending every little league, basketball, and hockey game in which his grandsons played. He was his grandchildren’s biggest fan, greatest role model, and strongest support.

Frank was also a devout Catholic, and could be found every Sunday in the very first row at Mass, likely two steps ahead of the priest and practically leading the service himself. He was a member of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in West Grove, and a former member of St. Joseph’s Church in Aston.

Frank died the same meat-and-potatoes Irishman he’s always been — one as stubborn as he was charming, and as loving as he was loved. He’s survived by his three children, six grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and three cherished sisters, Mary Barlow, Ruth Taylor and Patricia Cassell.

He was predeceased by his wife Betty and sister Letitia Cassell.

While this has been a great loss to those he loved, they are certain he is happy to finally be “up there,” likely enjoying a Phillies game and a day at the beach with Betty.  And of course, they’re sure everybody already knows his name.

You are invited to visit with Frank’s family and friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at the Assumption BVM Church, 300 State Road in West Grove. His Mass will follow. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Kennett Square.
