Elisabeth Young- Bruehl formerly of Newark

Elisabeth Young- Bruehl, 65, formerly
of Newark, well-known author, philosopher and psychoanalyst, died suddenly at
her home in Toronto on Dec. 1, from a pulmonary embolism. Dr Young – Bruehl was
born in Elkton, Md. on March 3, 1946 but moved to Newark, Del. at an early age,
where she graduated from Newark High School. She went on to Sarah Lawrence
College, where she studied under the poet Muriel Rukeyser. She then attended
the New School For Social Research in New York City, where she obtained a doctorate
in philosophy under Hannah Arendt, the German emigre philosopher who
wrote ”The Origins of Totalitarianism”.

After graduation she became a
faculty member at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. From there she moved to
Haverford College in Philadelphia, teaching both there and at Bryn Mawr.
Following that, she obtained certification as a psychoanalyst and began
practicing first in the Philadelphia area and then in New York City. During her
tenure at Wesleyan she wrote her prize – winning biography of Hannah Arendt,
“For Love Of The World”[1982]. Many other works followed, including “The Life
of Anna Freud”[1988], “The Anatomy of Prejudices”[1996], “Where Do We Fall When
We Fall In Love”[2003] “Why Arendt Matters”[2006] and her latest book,
“Childism” a study of the prejudices and abuse of children. This will issue in
January from the Yale University Press.

She was an active member of
several organizations in the fields of psychology, sociology and
psychoanalysis, giving many lectures in the US, Canada and Europe. She was well
known and liked by her academic peers all over the world. Her main works were
translated into several foreign languages, including Japanese. She and her
partner, Dr. Christine Dunbar formed their own publishing company, Caversham
Productions, which issued their joint project , “A 100 Year Timeline of
Psychoanalysis”[2009]. In short, she was a remarkable woman and she is greatly
missed by her family, including her partner, Christine Dunbar, her brother, H.
Gibbons Young [Donna], her sister Lois Young-Southard [John], her nieces and
nephews, Breck[Ingrid], Jonathan[Erin], Amy, and Matthew, her stepfather
Ernest Sutton and her step-daughter Zoe [Gavin]grand –daughters Ava and Daphne,
and her great-nephew Walter.

Young Sutton and her father, H. Gibbons Young Sr., predeceased her.

A memorial service will held at
11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 in the theater of Jenners Pond Retirement
Community, 2000 Greenbriar Drive,West Grove. Visitation will start at 10:30 a.m.
All friends and family are invited to attend. Burial in the Head of Christiana
graveyard outside of Newark, will be private.
