Abstract painter exhibits new work at Darlington Arts Center

Darlington Arts Center in Concord Township presents the new
work of renowned abstract painter Ellen Priest in a solo show entitled: New
Jazz Paintings on Paper: Freddie Hubbard's 'Up Jumped Spring'. Her paintings
are constructed from superimposed layers of paper -- the back layer opaque
watercolor paper, the front layers translucent vellum and each with drawing,
color and more recently, collage, creating a feeling of movement. The opening
reception of this exciting show will be Saturday, May 7 from 3 to 5 p.m. and is
a great chance to meet the artist, view her work and discuss her inspiration
while enjoying some complementary wine and cheese. The show will be open to the
public through May 27. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday 9 a.m.-9 p.m.
and Saturday 9 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information visit www.darlingtonarts.org or call

Abstract painter Ellen Priest has used jazz music as the
subject for her layered, collage paintings for over twenty years. This is the
first exhibition of her recently completed works in a new series based on
Freddie Hubbard’s ‘Up Jumped Spring.’ In 2010 she completed a four-year
body of work titled Jazz: Edward Simon’s ‘Venezuelan Suite’ #1-23,
collaborating directly with jazz pianist/composer Simon as he wrote his Suite
and developed it through improvisation in live performances. This series
garnered Priest great critical acclaim.

Priest has received two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Awards.
Her first solo museum exhibition was presented by the Philip and Muriel Berman
Museum of Art at Ursinus College in 2007. She has taught extensively at many
educational levels, from elementary school students to adults, most recently in
the University of the Arts Professional Institute for Educators. Priest holds a
Master of Divinity from Yale University and a B.A. from Lawrence University.
