Marie Hill Tryens of New London

Marie Hill Tryens of New London died July 28 at the age of 87 at the Preston Nursing Home in Jennersville, Pa.

She was born in New Castle on Tyne in England on Oct. 17, 1921. With her parents, James and Edith Hill, she emigrated to United States in 1923.  She grew up in Oxford with her sisters, Jenny and Lydia, where she graduated from Oxford High School before obtaining a nursing degree at Chestnut Hill. Marie served in WW II in the Philippines as an Army nurse where she married Harry, her husband of nearly 60 years. Harry and Marie lived in the Chester area prior to moving to New London in 1952 where they raised four children – Jeff, Alan, Bill and Judy. In their later years, Harry and Marie moved to the Jenner’s Pond retirement community in Jennersville where they spent many happy years before Harry’s passing in 2005.

Marie served as the first Avon Grove community nurse during the 1960s and ‘70s, later becoming the first school nurse at the Fred S. Engel Middle School. She later served as the school nurse at Avon Grove High School until her retirement in 1986. While serving as school nurse, she obtained a bachelor’s degree from West Chester University.

Marie served her community in many ways. She founded the New London Pack 41 Cub Scouts and remained involved with the troop for many years. She was a member of the New London Methodist church where she served as a trustee and taught Sunday school for over 40 years. She was a leader of the United Methodist Women. She also volunteered for the Red Cross for most of her life.

She was an avid Phillies fan and she enjoyed knitting. She was devoted to her friends and family hosting countless family picnics, canasta games and children’s birthday parties.

Marie is survived by sister, Jenny; her children – Jeff of Portland, Oregon, Alan, and his wife Elizabeth of Claymont, Bill of Albuquerque, N.M. and Judy, and her husband Jota of Silver Spring, Md.; her grandchildren – Wendi, Joshua, Daniel, Tisha, and Savannah; and great-grandchild, Sara.

A celebration of Marie’s life will be held at New London United Methodist Church, 1010 State Road, New London on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 1noon followed by a reception at the Church hall. You may visit with Marie’s family at the Church from 11a.m. to noon.
