Margaret Mary “Marge” Cannington (nee Tenley) of Jennersville

Margaret Mary “Marge” Cannington (nee Tenley) passed away May 15 at the Ruston facility of the Jenner’s Pond complex at Jennersville, as the result of a long illness.

Marge was born in Baltimore, Md. on February 6, 1921 to Mary E Tenley and raised in the city.  She began a career as a secretary at the Martin Aircraft manufacturing plant on Middle River following graduation from Eastern High school in 1939.  Shortly after Pearl Harbor Day, Marge married Gordon Eugene (“Ken”) Cannington, a Marine she had been dating.  Two days later Marge’s husband was shipped off to the Pacific theatre of operations where his combat role in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and other battles of the island hopping campaign kept them apart for the duration of the war.  Marge continued her work with Martin’s during this period.

Marge and Ken were reunited after the war and started their family while living first in Dundalk and subsequently in Gardenville.  Eventually Marge resumed her secretarial career with ‘Ma Bell’ at the Western Electric plant on Broening Highway.  She worked for Western until her retirement in 1983, establishing many valued friendships with her coworkers and a reputation as a blazing fast typist.

Marge had a talent for enjoying life. She was always energetic and enthusiastic in her demeanor, quick witted and loved laughing at jokes. The excitement of nightlife, music and dancing was a special joy to her and she was given to springing to her feet and beginning to dance at any time that music started. Marge and Ken enjoyed Boumi Temple functions and participating in barbeques, evenings at cards and crab feasts.  It was a special joy when such events were conducted on one of the boats that her husband had constructed or rebuilt.

Marge was a long-term parishioner at St Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church on Frankford Ave, serving in the CYO and CCD programs.  In her later years she served as a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer.

Currently, Marge is survived by her daughters Regina C. Gadd and Mary Jane Becker as well as 3 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held at St Gabriel’s R.C. church on Rte 41 in Avondale PA from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19. Her funeral Mass will follow at 11 a.m. A viewing will be held at Ruck’s Funeral Home, 5305 Harford Rd in Baltimore MD, from 10-11 a.m. May 20 with burial to follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.  It is suggested that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
