Letter: We’re better than this

With election day a week away, signs for both Democratic and Republican candidates have either been vandalized or stolen throughout Chadds Ford on a regular basis. Freedom of speech and expression are the bedrock of our democratic republic. We are all free to support our candidates by placing lawn signs on our property within the guidelines of the Chadds Ford Township Code. Defacing or removing political lawn signs on someone else's property is not only counter to our American values, but also constitutes crimes of trespass and vandalism with fines of up to $2000 in Pennsylvania.

As we together navigate what thankfully is the final week of this election season, let's all heed the better angels of our nature and approach each other respectfully. Come Nov. 6, some of us will be happy and some of us disappointed based on the electoral results. However, we will all still be neighbors and our children will still be friends in school. So, let's respect all of our rights to free speech and not engage in petty theft or vandalism. To do otherwise would be undemocratic, un-American, and not befitting the Chadds Ford that we all love. I have faith that we're better together and that we can disagree without being disagreeable.
