A message from Superintendent of Schools John Sanville.
Dear UCFSD Families and Staff,
We are in a unique and unprecedented situation on a couple of levels. First is that there is an escaped prisoner loose within the boundaries of our district. Second is that the area he is suspected of being in, in Pocopson, is roughly two square miles of our 77-square mile total area. The families and residents inside the search area are under exceptional duress. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
After talking with law enforcement including Lt. Colonel Bivins of Pennsylvania State Police, District Attorney Deb Ryan, local police, other superintendents, and the UCF Administrative Team, we have decided to open schools tomorrow.
To accommodate the families in the restricted search area including those who may be out of town we are offering several options for Tuesday, September 5, 2023:
- Excused absences for any students whose families are out of town and spending another night away;
- Excused absences for any student whose families would prefer to keep them home tomorrow
- PSP will escort buses in neighborhoods impacted by the search;
- PSP will allow UCFSD buses to use Routes 52 and 926 that are currently closed to the public
- Pocopson Elementary will be operating on a Secure Status for that extra layer of safety.
The grit and resilience of everyone impacted by this situation strengthens the entire UCF community. We, like you, hope that the prisoner is caught soon.
Your support is appreciated.
