The Watering Hole, the zoo’s new beer garden and oasis, opened on Friday, July 22. Sponsored by Chester County’s Victory Brewing Company, this outdoor retreat offers a place for zoo visitors to relax, grab a craft beer or glass of wine, according to a zoo press release.

The Watering Hole is located at the southernmost tip of the zoo and features reclaimed conversation-style seating, brightly-colored fabric umbrellas, lush landscaping, environmentally-friendly LED lighting and terra-cotta mosaic décor, the release said.

“We are excited to offer our guests an amazing new setting to enjoy with the family while visiting the zoo,” Amy Shearer, Philadelphia Zoo’s chief marketing officer, said in the release. “We have consistently heard from our visitors and members that having supplementary beverage choices to enjoy with lunch or during their visit are a welcomed addition, so we listened by providing more drink options at The Watering Hole as well as at other popular lunch destinations at the zoo.”

The menu offers light fare and a variety of 10 craft and domestic beers, including Victory’s Summer Love Ale, Prima Pils and Headwaters Ale as well as New Belgium Flat Tire, Goose Island IPA and Tröegs Sunshine Pils. For guests who prefer wine, pinot grigio, chardonnay and cabernet from Woodbridge will be available.  Beverages are served in clear, eco-friendly cups with prices ranging from $6 to $8, inclusive of taxes.

“As Philadelphia gave rise to our brewery’s amazing success in craft beer, we remain committed to our community and paying homage to our roots,” Bill Covaleski, Victory’s co-founder and brewmaster, said in the release. “The Watering Hole will serve as a vivid example of the universal attraction of craft beer. I can’t think of a more fun environment for folks to enjoy a refreshing brew.”

The Watering Hole was designed in partnership with Groundswell Design Group, creators of some of the most popular beer gardens in Philadelphia.  Entrance to The Watering Hole is included in zoo admission; hours of operation are Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and holidays.
