Lenape Bridge stretch of Rt. 52 closing – again

The area’s saga of troubled bridges will continue on Friday, July 8, when a section of Route 52 containing the Lenape Bridge closes – yet again – between Creek and Pocopson roads in Pocopson Township.

East Penn Railroad LLC is scheduled to do resurfacing from 6 p.m. on Friday, July 8, through 5 a.m. on Monday, July 11, according to Brad E. Rudolph, a PennDOT spokesman. He said the work is being done in advance of the road’s becoming a detour for the Route 926 Bridge replacement, which is scheduled to begin in February.

During next week’s construction, which is weather dependent, through traffic on Route 52 (Lenape Road) will be detoured over Pocopson Road, Route 926 and Creek Road. Heavy trucks will be detoured over Creek Road and Route 1. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area.

Last month, the bridge was closed to repair damage caused when a truck slammed into the bridge’s parapet on March 10. Another truck mishap exacerbated the damage on May 18.

If the Route 926 project goes as planned, the total job will take a year, but detours will last only six months and access to businesses in the area of the bridge will be kept open. Work is expected to begin in February with the installation of a traffic light at Route 52 and Pocopson Road, according to PennDOT.

Once that light is working, approaches to the Route 926 Bridge will be closed and construction will begin, a process estimated at four months. The bridge approaches on both sides – in Pocopson and Birmingham townships — will be raised to prevent them from flooding when the Brandywine Creek spills its banks, which has been a frequent occurrence.

When that phase is finished, the Creek Road/Route 926 intersection will be closed for two months so that a stretch of Creek Road can be re-aligned and culverts installed over Radley Run, according to PennDOT.
