Storm prompts Super Bowl warning

With another snowstorm threatening on Super Bowl Sunday, PennDOT is warning football revelers to avoid mixing alcohol and travel.

PennDOT data shows that last year in Pennsylvania on Super Bowl Sunday there were 287 crashes, with two fatalities in those crashes. Seventeen of the crashes were alcohol-related.

“Many people celebrate with friends and family for the Super Bowl, but no matter the day, we need to think safety first,” Acting PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. “Drivers should be prepared to stay home if conditions warrant, but regardless of what weather comes, people should never drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.”

According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to affect the region Sunday afternoon through Monday. The trend the past couple of days has been for the low pressure to shift farther north, which will bring more mixed precipitation (rain, snow, sleet) into the area.

Snow amounts have been trending downward across the greater Philadelphia area and have been increasing across the Lehigh Valley and points farther north. After 2 p.m. on Sunday, forecasters expect scattered snow with little accumulation; however, a wintry mix will kick in before midnight with one to three inches predicted.

Temperatures early Monday morning may be at or below freezing across southeastern Pennsylvania, generating freezing rain during the transition from snow to rain. An additional accumulation of one to two inches could occur.

Very cold air will filter back into the region behind this system on Tuesday, when evening temperatures may dip to 11. To monitor the latest weather information, visit www.weather.gov/phi.

To help motorists decide whether to travel, PennDOT recommends checking 511PA, the state’s free traveler information service, which features access to more than 700 traffic cameras. Conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, are available at www.511PA.com.
