The sign is up, and officials are hopeful that Victory at Magnolia will open on March 16.

As long as the weather cooperates, craft beer fans will be doing a Victory lap around the interior of Kennett Square’s new brewpub in approximately six weeks.

With fingers crossed, Bill Covaleski, co-owner of Victory Brewing Company, said a tentative opening date of March 16 has been set for Victory at Magnolia, a 250-seat upscale brew pub in Magnolia Place, a residential development being built at the corner of West Cypress Street and Mill Road in downtown Kennett Square.

Rusty Drumheller, the borough’s codes enforcement officer, called the time frame realistic. “I believe if the weather holds out, that they will be up and operating mid-March,” he said in an email. “The apartments above should also be occupied at that time.”

Victory, the nation’s 26th largest craft brewery, will occupy the entire bottom floor - about 8,100 square feet - of a four-story red brick building that will also house 33 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The Victory Brew Pub will feature on-premise brewing, a takeout beer component, and space for al fresco dining.

Hours for the restaurant and retail operation will be Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to midnight (the kitchen will close at 10 p.m.) and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (kitchen closing at 9 p.m.)

Owen Kolva, Victory’s chef, said the philosophies of the new restaurant would mirror the company’s Downingtown location in sourcing local ingredients and sustaining green initiatives. The house menu will offer seasonal selections and some signature items, such as Brewery Pretzels and Victory Wings, according to Victory’s web site.

Since mushrooms and Kennett Square go hand-in-hand, the menu will include the Kennett Burger - topped with sautéed creminis - and a Kennett Mushroom Sandwich that will feature roasted portobellos.

A seven-barrel brewery will be operated, featuring rotating selections of Kennett-brewed beer that will be unavailable elsewhere. In addition, local wines, Victory root beer, and homemade iced tea and lemonade will be sold.

Begun by Covaleski and Ron Barchet, childhood friends who met on a school bus in 1973, Victory Brewing Company formally debuted in February 1996 in Downingtown; its beers are now available in more than 30 states and nine countries. A year ago, Covaleski, addressing the annual meeting of Historic Kennett Square, said he appreciated the welcome the company had received from Kennett officials.

He said Victory had no interest in coming into Kennett Square and competing with existing businesses. He said by partnering with Kennett Realty, owned by the Pia family, well-known as the fourth-generation operators of Kaolin Mushroom Farm, the company was pursuing a project that would bring new residents to the borough.

When completed, Magnolia Place will also include 79 townhomes and twins, nearly half of have been sold, a spokeswoman said, adding that 15 are already occupied. For more information on Magnolia Place, visit http://www.kennettmagnolia.com/.
